Making Homemade Peanut Butter

One of the great advantages of having a good hand grain mill is that you can mill oily grain & nuts, the Wonder Junior Deluxe is our hand grain mill of choice. Today, we are going to show you how to make homemade peanut butter. This recipe will make about 3 cups of peanut butter.

You will need the following ingredients:

– 4 cups of FRESH roasted peanuts
– 1/4 cup of sugar
– 1/3 cup of canola oil
– 1 teaspoon of salt

Use the stainless steel milling burrs, not stone milling heads, for grinding the peanuts and set hand grain mill to a fine setting. If it is hard to turn the mill handle, just adjust the hand grain mill to a little less fine setting. The nuts should grind into a smooth paste, if they come out more like flour then you need to get fresher peanuts.

Now add the rest of the ingredients, canola oil last, and stir until it fully mixed and has a peanut buttery consistency. You now have a finished product, real homemade peanut butter.

Clean up should be a breeze. If you have a good hand grain mill, it should be completely washable, and the stainless steel milling burrs should come off easily. Just use warm water and some dish soap and your done.

This peanut butter will keep well in the fridge for about 2 months; hope you enjoy your fresh peanut butter.

Hand Grain Mill Info:

A good hand grain mill will give you great advantage over an electric grain mill in every category except speed. A good hand grain mill can mill finer, coarser, and does everything in-between giving you great flexibility to make and do things you can’t with an electric grain mill. Some of those things mill in a hand grain mill that you can’t in an electric grain mill are: flax seed, sunflower seeds, other oily grains, coffee beans, peanuts, and other nuts. The flexibility of having a wider variety of flour coarseness allows you to get fancy with your breads and have a quality of baked goods not possible with an electric grain mill, sure this is for a more advanced baker. Also, if the world turns upside down and you have no more power you can still use your hand grain mill.

An electric grain mill is always nice to have, especially if you make a lot of bread. Just remember that you won’t be able to make this wonderful homemade peanut butter or have some of the other benefits of a hand grain mill. Some people motorize their hand grain mill to produce flour faster but this is not as easy or convenient to do as some people would like you to make you think. For those of you who want the benefits of a hand grain mill and the speed of an electric grain mill, I suggest that you consider getting both.

For what it costs to get a Country Living hand mill with a motorizing kit, you are not far from what it costs to get a Wonder Junior Deluxe hand mill plus a WonderMill electric mill. I have used both the Country Living and the Wonder Junior Deluxe hand mills. I feel the Wonder Junior Deluxe is about the same in ability, durability, quality, and a whole lot less in price.
