Architecture

Architecture is the harmonious combination in a structure of both utility and beauty. The term utility means the function, or purpose, of a building. The uses of buildings are many and various, and the considerations taken into account in their planning, are therefore diverse and complex. So, a hospital needs to be planned to give each patients room not only a maximum amount of air space and sunlight, but also efficient heating and ventilating machinery has to be installed to maintain a uniform temperature. Every detail needs to be designed to insure sanitation. Entries in the surgical rooms must be suitably arranged. Mechanisms must be provided to deaden or eliminate any and all noise. Especially isolated quarters must be constructed for contagious diseases. Every ward must have its own peculiar equipment for it’s own particular uses.

In the design of a hotel, skill and ingenuity has to be exercised in confining in the mechanical rooms, scarcely exceeding ten per cent of the basement or utility area, the hydraulic and pneumatic machinery, HVAC, lighting systems, and machinery for elevators. The same complexity of conditions exists in school buildings, government buildings, churches, etc. The detail of the utility of a design is way too vast a subject to be taken up in this brief and elementary article.

In the consideration of beauty, you come across entirely different conditions. Beauty can’t be defined; it’s an elusive principle. Any monument, whatever its function, needs to conform to one or more of the architectural rules of beauty. An examination of the greatest achievements in the field of architecture reveal definite methods of procedure, certain ideals that architects try to achieve, and certain principles that guide them in their work.

Every architectural classic has its variable and invariable elements. The variable attributes of a design are temporary and local in character. They’re particular and unique in that they’re the traits of a single building. These attributes are universal and common to the masterpieces through the ages. They’re the “permanent substance” of architecture.

As a drafter, working for an architect, engineer, or designer, you can share the wonder of architecture. It’s a wonderful field of study if you’re interested in creating beauty in buildings and homes.
